Could a GLP-1 Drug Become an Anti-Aging Drug? The drugs reshaping
weight loss and diabetes care may have an even larger story ahead. A new
study in older female mice found that semaglutide—the active ingredient in
Ozempic and Wegovy—extended median lifespan by roughly 12%, while
also improving measures of late-life health.
The treated mice lived a median of 834 days, compared with 742 days for
untreated mice. That is not evidence that semaglutide extends human life.
Mice are not people, and longevity research has a long history of promising
animal results that do not translate cleanly into clinical practice. But the
finding is notable because GLP-1 drugs already have human evidence for
benefits beyond weight loss, including cardiovascular protection. It raises a
serious question: are these medicines affecting some of the deeper
metabolic pathways that drive aging itself?
For the longevity field, this is exactly the kind of result worth watching—
encouraging, biologically plausible, and still far from a prescription for
healthy aging. The next important chapter will be carefully designed, human
studies that separate the effects of weight loss from any direct effect on the
aging process. Source: [Nature] https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-02757-1
